1. She first presented herself as a man – Bruce Kennedy.
2. She claimed to have made a lot of money in the publishing business, yet an Google search on her name yielded only 6 entries -- rather meager for someone with the 20 years in publishing that she claimed.
3. Her conversion to Islam was most unusual. Her letter describing her conversion is unlike any letter I've read of any other conversion. There was no mention of contacts with local Muslims prior to conversion, and it stated that she went to Al-Azhar in Cairo to take her vows. It read like something prepared by a third party who is not very familiar with Islam. That letter has since been altered, and it mentions yet another alias -- Paul Morris-Read.
5. Her resume failed to list a summer serving with the Mennonite Disaster Service. I found this at but her name was subsequently removed from this page, and I know that the CIA uses many front groups.
6. On August 23, 2003, TRACEROUTE and WHOIS (Internet trace tools) results for jihadunspun.com show that:
(a) jihadunspun.com is a front for something else becauseTRACEROUTE "fails to get packets through to the remote end system";
(b) Bruce (Bev?) Kennedy -- a fictitious name as stated in e-mail from Bev Kennedy -- is listedas Administrative, Technical, and Zone contact. Internet Service Providers are not likely to provide service to persons presenting fictitious names whose web site receives "over 800,000 viewers each day";
(c) WHOIS jihadunspun.com lists two servers NS1.YOURGALAXY.COM and NS2.YOURGALAXY.COM, and a TRACEROUTE on these leads to another dead end. Purchases from the jihadunspun.com store can be made through PayPal. PayPal requires bank references, and will not issue merchant accounts to persons presenting fictitious names. It defies logic that jihadunspun can remain anonymous to any government agency with an interest in disabling the web site.
The answer to why would insurgents kidnap a Beverley Giesbrecht -- aka Bruce Kennedy, Bev Kennedy, Paul Morris-Read, Khadija Abdul Qahaar -- is pretty obvious. She may not be who she claims she is.

A line from one letter to a family allegedly states: "I feel bad that you have lost your son but I don't feel bad that a murderer of innocent civilians has lost his life".

"The reports I find abhorrent," he said. "If true, bear in mind the matter is before a court, an evil act of cowardice is probably the mildest term I could use for it."
